Black Friday 2014: Thanksgiving crowds descend on Syracuse-area retailers

Syracuse, N.Y. — A bit of light snow didn’t keep Thanksgiving Day shoppers home around Syracuse.

Black Friday hotspots like Target, Best Buy and Destiny USA were plenty busy. Last year was the first most big-name retailers were open on Thanksgiving Day and crowds turned up in large numbers.

This year was no different.

“It is what it is,” said Nelson Cruz of Syracuse, who was in line outside the Best Buy in DeWitt for a 50-inch TV.

The first person in line at the store arrived at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night. He came prepared with plenty of layers, a comfortable folding chair and an umbrella.

“This isn’t a tradition,” said Nate Adams of Syracuse. “I just know I lose out every single year. I was determined.”

Several hundred people were waiting in line outside Best Buy by the time it opened at 5 p.m. The stores often draw sizeable crowds with their Black Friday deals.

There was a little running when the doors opened, but no pushing or shoving. Most shoppers headed straight for big-ticket gadgets like TVs and tablets.

The line in the store’s TV area was snaking through the aisles within minutes.

The National Retail Federation is projecting an increase in total holiday sales this year of 4.1 percent to a total of nearly $617 billion. The average consumer will spend $718 on holiday gifts in 2014, according to consulting firm Accenture.

At Destiny USA, the crowd around 6 p.m. seemed smaller than last year. But store openings this year were more spread out and the mall began to fill up by around 7 p.m.

Destiny was the first Thanksgiving/Black Friday shopping experience for Norwegian exchange student Mats Refsdal. He’d heard of the tradition before coming to the U.S. and wanted to see it for himself.

“We’ve seen some videos and stuff, but we don’t really have it back in Norway,” he said. “I didn’t really know everyone did it.”

Refsdal said he was a fan.

Maggie Cooper of West Monroe was shopping with Refsdal. She said she was surprised the mall wasn’t more crowded. It was her first time out shopping on Thanksgiving.

“Some of [the stores], I don’t like how early they’re getting,” she said. “We didn’t finish Thanksgiving until like 4 and there were already stores open. So that kind of takes away from family time.”

As many as 140.1 million people could shop this weekend, according to the National Retail Federation. That includes as many as 95.5 million Black Friday and 25.6 million on Thanksgiving.

‘Big Hero 6′ End Credits Scene Revealed In New Featurette

When I interviewed Big Hero 6 directors Don Hall and Chris Williams, I mentioned to them their Marvel adaptation was missing an end credits scene like other Marvel movies. As I walked out the door, Williams stopped me and said, “See it again once the film is in theaters.” Which I did. And lo and behold, Disney Animation held back an awesome end credits scene just for paying audiences — most screenings right up until the release of the film did not have the tag.

The scene not only potentially sets up a sequel, it features a world class voice cameo. We won’t spoil it above the jump, but below, we will do so, and even show you some footage. Learn about the Big Hero 6 end credits scene below.

So at the end of the credits, Fred (T.J. Miller) walks into his house dejected. He misses his family, who is always away on their special island. His dad bears a striking resemblance to Stan Lee and when he touches the painting showing a family portrait, a secret room opens. Fred walks in — he can’t believe it, his parents are superheroes! Just then, his father, who looks like and is voiced by Stan Lee, walks in. Fred is stunned and his dad tells them they share the same attitude when it comes to laundry. The pair hug and the scene ends with dad telling Fred they have a lot to talk about.

Pretty awesome right?

Well Mashable has a new featurette featuring Stan Lee talking about his small role in the Big Hero 6 end credits scene which includes some footage.

The Disney animated adventure “Big Hero 6″ moved into second place with $20. 1 million

NEW YORK — “Mockingjay, Part 1″ didn’t catch fire like the last installment of “The Hunger Games,” but it still set the highest opening of the year with $123 million at the weekend box office.

According to studio estimates Sunday, Lionsgate’s “Mockingjay” opened well below the $158 million debut of last year’s “Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” But the decision to split the final book in Suzanne Collins’ dystopian trilogy into two films clearly paid off. “Mockingjay” did even better overseas, where it made $152 million.

The Disney animated adventure “Big Hero 6″ moved into second place with $20. 1 million. Christopher Nolan’s space epic “Interstellar” came in third with $15.1 million.

Unique Styles of Mascot Costume is A Wonderful Idea

Nowadays, it might be better to see if the kids actually do have any unique ideas. Some parents might find this to be a lot less taxing on both themselves and their partners. Often, at the end of the day, this is naturally the child’s school that this particular mascot is going to be representing for them.

You can use a good mascot costume for future events as well. So, while there is a limit to price considerations so that you don’t go overboard on spending on the costume, at the same time, you also don’t want to buy cheap stuff. 12 Gift Exchange Ideas for Your Office Holiday Party

Throwing an office holiday party this year? A great way to celebrate and get in the holiday spirit is by having themed gift exchanges. These activities add some fun into passing out presents, and themes takes the pressure off employees who struggle with gift shopping.

From thoughtful charity donations to co-worker trivia games, here are 10 fun gift exchange ideas for your next holiday party.

imagesChristmas party01

Secret Santa

You’ve probably already participated in a few Secret Santa exchanges in the past, but in case you’ve forgotten how this long-time tradition works, everyone in the office gets anonymously assigned one co-worker for whom they will buy an inexpensive gift. Usually, names are drawn from a hat and there’s a strict spending limit. And if you want to make it more fun, encourage employees to leave hints about their identities for their recipients up until the big reveal.

White elephant

If your employees have a good sense of humor, a white elephant gift exchange (sometimes also known as a Yankee Swap) may be just the thing you need to spread some holiday cheer. For this game, each employee will bring in one wrapped gift to be put in a central location. From there, they’ll take turns selecting presents. The first person to go opens the gift they chose, and the next person has the option to steal the previous person’s gift (in which case, that person would have to choose another) or select a new one. But what makes a white elephant exchange unique is the type of presents involved; white elephant gifts are usually weird or funny items, or unwanted things that employees choose to re-gift. [Thanks For Nothing: Odd Co-Worker Gifts ]

Gift auction

Spice things up at your gift exchange with a little friendly competition. For a gift auction, have each of your employees bring in a gift that will be put on display in the office. Then, assign each employee a certain number of points (100 usually works well, for example) with which they can bid on the gifts they like as they’re presented. Let the auction run until each employee has used up his or her points and everyone wins a gift. And if you prefer to keep things a little quieter, you can always run it as a silent auction. In that case, put boxes in front of each gift so that employees can write their bids on slips of paper to be drawn and checked for a winner afterward.

Book exchange

This one works especially well if your office is full of bookworms. Have each employee bring in a copy of his or her favorite book, or a book by his or her favorite author. To decide who gets which book, simply draw names out of a hat. And to make things even more special, you can ask employees to write a note to the recipient, explaining why that book is so important to them. Not only is it a fun and inexpensive way to exchange gifts, but your employees can learn a lot about one another and potentially discover similar interests, too.

Gift grab

To do a gift grab, all of your employees have to bring in a small, wrapped gift under a certain price limit and place it in a central location. Put a number in a hat for each person participating, and then have everyone draw a number to determine the order in which they get to select their gifts. Simple enough, but what makes a gift grab special is the ability to steal gifts after you’ve chosen one. Once the first person has gone, anyone after that can choose to either take another person’s present or choose from the pile. The person whose gift is stolen can do the same — either steal another’s gift or pick a new one — but they cannot steal back their gift. Play until there are no gifts left to exchange.

Coffee mugs

Nearly everyone in the office drinks coffee or tea, or at the very least, has a use for a coffee mug. Why not make gift-giving much simpler by limiting your employees to exchanging fun and decorative coffee mugs? Assign everyone a random recipient (you can draw names from a hat, like in a Secret Santa exchange), and set a price limit. To make it even more fun, have employees fill their mugs with little edible treats, like candies or hot cocoa packets, before they exchange them.

Co-worker trivia

A co-worker trivia game is a great way to turn your gift exchange into an icebreaker. Have everyone bring a wrapped gift under a certain price limit, and put all the gifts in one common place. Then, have your employees write out a little-known fact about themselves and put it on a slip of paper. Draw papers one at a time, reading out the fact. The first person to guess whom a fact is about gets to choose his or her present first. Keep going until all the presents have been exchanged — and your employees know each other a little better, too.

Charity exchange

Instead of giving out presents, why not do some good while spreading holiday cheer? Have everyone write down their names and favorite charity on a piece of paper, put it in a hat and then let each employee take turns selecting names. Then, employees will make a small donation (again, set a money limit) to that charity in the selected person’s name.

Recipe baskets

Even if you’re not that great at cooking, everyone has a favorite recipe. A fun alternative to actual presents? Exchanging your favorite recipes, but not just a card with instructions. Employees should make a gift basket complete with the instructions and the ingredients needed to make the dish. To choose who gets which baskets, draw names out of a hat.

Holiday cheer exchange

This is a great way to really get into the holiday spirit. Have everyone bring in a wrapped gift under a certain price limit, and sit in a circle. Then give them directions to stand up if they meet certain holiday-related criteria. (Things like, “If you’ve already decorated your Christmas tree,” or, “If you’re wearing red,” work perfectly.) Those who are standing should swap gifts. Play as many rounds as you like, but make sure everyone ends up with a gift other than his or her own.

Musical gifts

“Musical gifts” is a play on the classic game musical chairs. For this one, everyone brings in one wrapped gift under a set price limit. Then, have employees sit in a circle holding their gifts, and play a song. While the song is playing, employees should pass their gifts to the left. Whatever gift they have when the music stops is the gift they get to open.

For a cakewalk, everyone buys a random gift (it’s probably best to set a price limit), and you’ll have to randomly place numbers on the floor. Similar to musical chairs, someone will play a song, and when the song ends, everyone has to stand on a number. Then, you have two options: You can draw a random number and let whoever is standing on that number choose their gift. Or, as an alternative, you can label presents with numbers so that the number an employee ends up standing on corresponds to the gift they get. There may not be real cake involved in a cakewalk, but it’s still a more interesting way to give out presents.

By the way,in my opinion, lovely mascot costumes will also be the best gift during your Christmas Party.

Some quick thoughts:

- Goldy rocks!

- Sooooooo many GIFable moments in this video to keep me busy and entertain us all in the future.

- We’re so lucky our mascot A) can spin his head (unlike a certain popcorn box wearing skunk), B) doesn’t have soulless eyes, and C) doesn’t look like a ratty high school costume.
